Honduran Milk Snake

One of the most striking colubrids in the hobby. The Honduran Milk Snake's bold banding makes it instantly recognisable — and the tangerine morph intensifies those warm orange and red tones to a breathtaking degree. Active, curious and relatively straightforward to keep, it is a rewarding species for keepers moving beyond their first snake.

Origin
Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica
Temperament
Calm and handleable — excellent for intermediate keepers
Size
90 - 150 cm
Lifespan
15–20 years in captivity
Did you know

Despite its name, the Milk Snake has nothing to do with milk — the legend that they sneaked into barns to drink from cows is entirely fictional. They were simply found near farms because that's where the mice were.

Housing
Terrestrial setup, minimum 90×45×40 cm for adults — milk snakes are more active than people expect and appreciate the space. Deep substrate, secure lid essential — they are persistent escape artists and will find any gap. Provide a warm hide, a cool hide and a water dish.
Temperature & Humidity
Warm side 28–30°C achieved via overhead heating (deep heat projector or ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat). Cool side 22–24°C. A proper thermal gradient is essential — unlike tarantulas, snakes cannot regulate their temperature without one. Humidity 40–60%, substrate dry. A small moist hide aids shedding.
Feeding
Frozen/thawed mice or rats appropriate to the snake's girth. Adults feed every 10–14 days, juveniles every 7 days. Generally eager feeders — if refusing food check temperatures and ensure the hide feels secure.
Handling
Generally calm once established. Allow 2 weeks to settle before first handling. Avoid handling 48 hours after feeding. Juvenile milk snakes can be slightly nippy but calm down significantly with regular gentle handling.
Experience Level
Intermediate. Suitable for keepers with some snake experience. The secure lid requirement and active nature demand a little more attention than a beginner species, but the reward is one of the most visually stunning snakes in the hobby.
