Housing
Arid terrestrial setup, minimum 90×45×40 cm for adults — females especially appreciate the extra space. Deep sandy substrate (10–15 cm) is essential — Hognose snakes are natural burrowers and will spend much of their time underground. Provide a warm hide, a cool hide and a water dish. Secure lid essential — they will find any gap.
Temperature & Humidity
Warm side 30–32°C achieved via overhead heating (deep heat projector or ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat). Cool side 22–24°C. A proper thermal gradient is essential — unlike tarantulas, snakes cannot regulate their temperature without one. Humidity 30–50%, substrate dry. A small moist hide aids shedding.
Feeding
Frozen/thawed pinky or fuzzy mice appropriate to the snake's girth, every 5–7 days for juveniles, every 10–14 days for adults. Hognose can be dramatic about food refusal — especially before a shed or during winter. Don't panic. Toffifee has been proving this point for weeks 😄
Handling
Generally very calm and handleable once settled — Hognose snakes are known for becoming genuinely interactive with their keepers. Allow 2 weeks to settle before first handling and avoid handling 48 hours after feeding. If they play dead, congratulations — you've witnessed one of nature's greatest dramatic performances.
Experience Level
Beginner. One of the most characterful and rewarding snakes in the hobby. Hardy, handleable and endlessly entertaining — once you've seen a Hognose play dead, you'll never be afraid of snakes again.
